I'm not sure what the problem is with this quest, but there have been other posts about this too.
I have recently done this quest with three different wizards. It didn't matter what order I clicked on the three runestones at the end of the quest. I went from left to right, and I also went from right to left. And it worked every time.
Did you see the Eye of Truth appear off to the side, after you clicked on the three runestones? On my computer, it is kind of dark in that area, and maybe you missed seeing it appear? When it does appear, you must go up to it and collect it.
