I bought some crowns and spent some of them. But, I have around 400 left and I cant spend it on card packs that cost 399. I can gift them, though. I tried spending a bit of it on a gift, but that did not fix it.

If you mouse over the buy button when it is gray, it will tell you why you can't purchase the item. Your backpack could be full as Prof. Greyrose has stated or you could have too many treasure cards or reagents.
Adding to what Professor Greyrose said, you may have to delete, sell, use or transfer some reagents or pet snacks to your bank if you have 999 of them.
