you have to place it in your attic; a lot of the darkmoor-themed items are glitched as well, and prof. wethersfield suggested this as a workaround/alternative to starting over.

Where did you place it and in which house?
Alternately, you can always pick up items through the attic. Just open the attic and go to the "house" tab then move the item to your backpack from there.
