I'm pretty sure it's so you won't get matched up with friends and boost(getting your rank because the other person does nothing in the battle and lets you defeat them). It's even more unfair than puppeting.
So you dont choose your team/opponents. As you see in practice pvp, noobs joining a lvl 90 wizard and when they switch teams, the noob follows. I've lost in practice because of my tea sooooooo many times Thats why its random, so its fair teams. Friends are allowed to be on same team
