There really is no point in buying crowns other than to buy various items for the heck of it. But, there are some things you may want/need that can only be bought with crowns, like mounts and packs. And they are hard to get because for the sole reason, Wizard101 is a company, and they need to make money somehow.

Play trivia on https://www.freekigames.com/trivia and get 100 free crowns per day. It adds up pretty fast.
