Key Boss "may-cast" wands

I read where the Key bosses can drop various wands that have regular attacks as well as a "may cast" attack. I'm curious as to how this works. For instance, Lambent Fire can drop Lambent's Stick of Clamoring which gives 5 Super Jolt Storm attacks + the "may cast" spell Shift Horned Knight, a six-pip Life spell. Since the pip cost is given, it leads me to assume that if it "may casts" it's going to use six of your pips (or three power pips if you're a Life wizard). Can anyone tell me for sure if this is the case? It could be unfortunate if you were wanding off a weakness in preparation for your big attack only to have your wand use up your pips and ruin your set-up.

I've tested one of these wands and they don't use your pips, but they will only "may-cast" their spell when you use a wand strike and have the required pips.

May Cast attack wands don't use up pips. They are triggered by casting your wand attack on a creature, and it will sometimes follow up with the weapon cast attack on the same creature.

Errol and Seethe, thanks for the responses. It's good to know that it doesn't use your pips. It was confusing since the pip cost is displayed. I guess the reason it's there is so you can decide when it might be a good time to do a wand strike if you don't want to risk the may-cast.

Just a follow-up on my original question...
I managed to score one of these babies from Lambent Fire in Avalon. Everything mentioned by previous responders is correct with one exception...
You do not have to have the required number of pips in order to trigger the may-cast effect. The wand I have gives a may-cast Life spell (Shift Horned Knight) which shows a requirement of 6 pips. The may-cast has triggered with as few as 1 pip in my pip total so pip-count has no bearing on whether it will trigger or not.
This being said however, it brings up another question (or actually a re-visitation of one of my original points) which is... why is there a pip count shown at all? My only guess is that this particular spell is, or will be, available as a normal cast card on some up-coming gear. At this point the only reference to this spell in the Wiki is the may-cast wands from Lambent Fire.

Even if it's not available in the future, my guess is that the spell designers put a pip cost to it to leave the door open for having it added as item/treasure/lore spells.
