Im a slightly older player but I find this game nice and cruisy after years of WoW and Diablo, I can just log in and play for a bit when Im free each day but not stuck on for hours.
In saying that, it seems almost impossible to find people to play with and do dungeons with if I want to try some of the harder content. Is there a place where people gather to get in groups or a message board I can post on or just some people of a similar mind set of not being too intense who are keen on playing dungeons every now and then?

On the Home Page here, under "Communities", you can find several fansites that might help you.
One in particular that I like is wizard101central.com. This link shows information on "in-game quest help and meetups":
