I was just wondering what the purpose of switching realms would be? Are they different servers? I haven't been able to find anywhere that explains what realms are, and the advantages of switching to a different realm while playing.
Young Wizard, this information is right in our Player Guide.
Wizard101 has several Realms for our players to enjoy. All the Realms are identical and you can switch between Realms easily when you're not in a duel. Simply press Esc and select the very last top on the tab with the above icon - and you will see a list of Realms to choose from.
CTRL - M is the shortcut key to bring up this section of your journal.
Why switch Realms? Players may choose to switch between Realms that are more or less populated based on their play style.
If you are looking for players to adventure with, you may wish to switch to a Realm with a higher population.
If you are having trouble meeting up with friends or family, make sure you are all meeting up on the same Realm!
I switch realms when i hunt for reagents, and looking for a boss that is in the open. Also sometimes i prefer not tripping over other people and other times being able to jump into a fight in order to kill multipule monsters with less fighting.

I switch realms when farming reagents and to switch to realms that don't lag as bad as some of the busy ones. From time to time you also need to switch realms to find things when others have just done the quest...such as burning the towers in Moo Shu, etc.
