Friend code used for crowns?

I hear people talking about using friend codes for crowns for both you and your friend? I wanted to use it with someone but i don't know how to get it. Does this code really give both people crowns or does one person have to buy crowns before you put in the code. (so many questions)

huh we get crowns for using a friend code i have used this friend code and i never got crowns
