i need help beating a really strong boss, but when my friends try teleporting to me, all that comes up is a pop-up decribing that "your friend is busy".
Sometimes, in certain towers, it won't allow you to port to your friends because I guess some towers only allow people who were standing on the sigil to fight. It's a way of making sure that people won't come in to help you I guess. Although, if its for a new spell then you'll have to do those by yourself. Hope this answered your question

Depending on the quest you are doing this will happen.
Quests for spells are solo events, you must do them alone. Some dungeons though out the spiral the wizard(s) you want to help you must enter the instance with you and they must have the quest or have done it to be able to enter the sigil.
You are reaching the part of the game where things become more complicated and the rules start to change. If you don't have friends to help with harder battles the game may slow down to a crawl for you.
After waiting weeks for help on an instance I became a mainly solo player, all my original friends left the game. I learned how to defend my self better in battles and was then able to move on in the game as I wanted to not as someone else was able to help me to, yes defeat was more often but I went back knowing more about how to play the game. Nothing worse then sitting outside something waiting for a stray pass er by for days on end, I feel for those in the game who are forced to do this.
As you get to the higher worlds this becomes a more common event to be busy and starts in DragonSprye mainly.

I don't know which quest you are working on, but early in the game we start seeing this message. The first one I remember is Golem Tower in Wizard City. That tower must be done "solo", and our friends see this message if they try to teleport to us. It does happen on some other quests too, especially school-specific quests that your professor gives you. Hope this helps.

Here is a small trick that helps when you have to solo a boss.
1) Make sure all your potion bottles are full.
2) when you enter the area where the boss is place a mark. (There are a few areas where you cannot do this, but in most areas you can).
3) concentrate on killing the minion first.
4) If you die after killing the minion and are teleported to the commons of the world you are in, IMMEDIATELY drink a potion and port back to your mark. You are not given much time, so do not stand around gathering wisps or playing mini games.
5) After porting back, and you have killed the minion, the boss should be alone. This will make the fight much easier.
I have used this trick countless times. When fighting the boss for my level 88 Myth spell, I had to kill the minions one at a time. It took me longer, but in the end, i did get my spell.

P.S. This also works in most dungeons, but not in the 'towers' that are prevalent in DS.
That is a solo instance and no one can port in on those type of battles.
Actually, that does not necessarily mean it is a solo instance. There are some instances or dungeons that as Brwac stated, players have to be able to enter in a normal manner as in having already done that particular one or have the quest. But they have to be standing on the sigil and it HAS to be lit for them. If not, they can not enter. Many of the instances and dungeons have been made NO port for the simple fact too many lower levels were porting in to gain rewards they did not earn or power leveling.
