1. What happened to being able to play all the way through without a subscription? It's not that much money to chip in but I think I remember not having to pay to unlock anything integral to the main storyline of the game
2. What happened to the thriving fan fiction community I remember? I'm pretty sure it was on the message boards on this site
3. Does this website still have those doodle comics?
Thanks in advance for anyone answering these questions, sorry if I posted in the wrong place
Re: Just got back into Wizard101 and I have questions
It has never been free to play all the way through. It was free to play up until Triton Avenue. But once you completed everything you could do up to there, you had to pay for Firecat Alley, Cyclops Lane, Colossus Boulevard, and every world and priced zone thereafter if you didn't have a membership.
If I remember correctly, you used to be able to port to friends in zones you hadn't bought if you didn't have a membership, but that's the only thing that's changed. That happened about 3 or 4 years ago I believe. Is that what you're thinking of?
Re: Just got back into Wizard101 and I have questions
I don't know, I played when there was only 6 worlds. I remember trying out Celestia in Beta. You're probably right though, if you and I are talking about the same time period

first of all, welcome back :)
1. in the time i've been around (almost 5 years), the game has never been free to play beyond triton ave.
there are also several talented writers over at wizard101central (a fan site) whose work you may enjoy. zenmetsu, alurabh, and scarlet silverweaver are the ones that stand out, though there are others as well.
(i once attempted to write some wizardly fan-fiction... it was supposed to be a short story aimed at a younger audience, but it ended up being so dark and gratuitously violent that george r.r. martin probably would have begged me to tone it down. lol. needless to say, i will not post it here.)
3) pretty sure abracadoodle is still a thing (if not, i will cry black little wizard tears).
