Not playing your school: Stories...

Some people just can't help themselves...or don't understand the school of the wizard they are logged on to...

here are a couple funny stories about this...

2012 Mirror Lake: Farming max level on my Life with 3* other Life Wizards...since no one ever wanted to go in the hot seat (first position) I did every fight...No one healed...3 of the 4 of us died multiple times...I tried in vain to heal the team always at my expense...but kept dying....there was no excuse for this at all...I berated my dysfunctional 'team' and left the fray...beyond ridiculous.

*you may ask: why did u go in with all Life wizards?...my Life can kick some pretty decent bottom so I wasnt worried about firepower...

2015 Morganthe Chamber: Farming on 100 Death wiz...Storm, Life and Balance all present...so lets see...I'm stacking feints...Storm is blading himself, Balance is trapping and blading Storm...Life is blading himself and Forest Lords for like 5K damage...really? Yep...Storm leaves...we all leave...after picking up our jaws from the floor...

Know your school, your role in team, it's not that hard.

Some of my best ML runs have been all spirit or all life, we just click better. Decent health, decent resist, massive hairy beast, nice victory heal, receive pixie stix.

I've seen some pretty bad fires. One friend used some form of pack gear to get his universal damage to about 70. He had around 210 global critical. Slapped on a storm amulet and went in with tc storm lord. Didn't do a bad job of it, either - managed about 4k. When we asked him why he didn't just dragon, he said dragon didnt do enough damage. Mind you this guy can get 86 fire boost in his regular firestarter gear + pet. A colossal dragon backed up with blades can clear 4k easily on the main + first tick.

Worst myth ever: I asked an exalted myth friend on my list for help running waterworks. He obliged and we went in with 2 other players. He seemed fine, if maybe a little reluctant to attack, so his frogs were always massive overkill. We decide to dispel Sylster to keep blades. Later at sylster he changed his deck, putting in ONLY calendars. So here we are trying to trap stack after dispelling to keep our blades. He is gearing up to hit. I place double feints on each of the bosses. He hits on last trap round with calendar, it does insert ridiculous number here damage. Then the cheat cycle starts over again, we do this twice more for the mini bosses. I'm grumpy because it's costing me 1-pip dissipates to do this. Judging from the six figures of hurt Sylster took, he could have frogged with a single feint on each boss and cleaned them all out. I see this with fires as well - efreet, efreet, efreet. NO! A good team can buff you enough to take out all enemies with just your 4-pip aoe.

I am not sure you meant that to be funny. Hmmm. Do you ASK people if they will (blade, heal, trap, etc.) or do you just assume they know? I ask this because I think people really need to take the time to talk to your team before hand but everyone seems to be in too much of a hurry to start. A few minutes of discussing "roles" could help to eliminate the scenario you talk about in a dungeon as simple as even WW. Just because I am balance does NOT MEAN I have what you may need. Balance for example, has such a variety of spells we could not possibly fit them all in one deck. So if you are a death wizard and expect me to blade you but you didn't ask me, the joke is on you because I may only have element blades and traps in. Sometimes a life wizard can do more damage then a myth - it all depends on the gear doesn't it? Maybe the myth has high health or can equip gear that makes them a "tank". So the myth could take damage while someone else heals and the life attacks. I am sure I am not alone when I say "know your school" isn't much of a help. I am balance but I crit on death almost every time with the gear I have collected and crafted. My ice wizard hits higher and crits more with fire spells then with her ice spells. My myth wizard hits high with her life spells and crit heals often. Just saying, a little direction up front can save heartache later.

While I don't claim to know, let alone categorize, ALL the play styles, there are certain ones that stick out in any MMO environment.

1. Hardcore: The ones that MUST complete ALL content of a game either "First" or ASAP. They will measure you by your knowledge base of the game rather than get to know you as a person. While they have the ability to play with others, the first sign of lack of game content usually compels them to leave.

2. Avid: I classify myself in this category. Those that are in this category share many aspects of the hardcore player, but with less seriousness, and are, generally, more flexible. We play with a purpose, while not losing the "fun" aspect of the game. If you are willing to learn, I am willing to help you.

3. Casual: These players log on with hardly any reliable frequency, and often play for the "escape" aspect of the game. They are simply relieving stress from their day, or week, and are on no specific time table, or have no overwhelming desire to acquire gear, achievements, or levels, in a certain time frame. These players are often very willing to help others, although, they may not possess a great knowledge base of the game, or your character. NOTE: RL is the main reason for many "casual" players, so don't underestimate their abilities.

4. Lazy: These players take every opportunity to take advantage anyone who allows it. Rarely have any beneficial knowledge of the game, or their character, and could care less about their actions and how it affects a group. They will often ask anyone who is willing to listen for any help, rather than look up information for themselves.

So...when you group up? Ask the others how they like to play. The minutes spent before you stand on the Sigils will be less than finding out the hard way that you shouldn't have accepted the invitation to play with those players.

I'm a Death School wizard, and I play Death, My way :)

you said: Know your school, your role in team, it's not that hard.

how about getting to know your team/the people you're playing with... that's not complicated either.any time i join a team, i talk to the other players first. find out who is best-suited to play what role, and maybe make some recommendations based on that.

a couple of weeks ago, i (exalted balance) took 2 level 90 conjurers through tartarus. one was our hitter, the other buffed him, and i played healer/support to both. it was a bit of a challenge, but we eventually found our groove and made it through.

my storm wizard farmed morganthe with a fire/death/jade life group, and guess who played all 3 major roles (tank, healer, dd)? that's right, this girl did!

my life wizard also played dd on a waterworks run with a team of 2 other life wizards, as decided by the group; one buffed. and the other healed. this same wizard also played dd in a fire/storm/balance group (lol).

as you can see, some of these wizards are not in their traditional roles. but i knew my team: we talked to each other, and we figured out how to best optimize the group's collective resources. so, instead of telling other people how to play, why not get to know them and do the same?
