How to defeat the last boss in Dueling Diego

Almost every time I play Dueling Diego I get to the part where I have to fight that other guy at the pool of lava but he seems invincible. I wanted to know if anyone knows how to beat him. If you do please let me know. Thanks.

If he is hit by a falling stalagtite he will lose a life.
