Fish are definitely good for decorations. They are also good to sell for gold. But they are also used in crafting recipes and you can get some pretty cool unique items from chests. For example, you can fish up rare code wands in Zafaria and you can get mounts from chests in some houses.
I love fishing for fishing's sake but there are definite uses for it.
